Article 6.4 has been fully adopted by all parties at COP29. However, beyond the greenhouse reduction/removals, do you know what the sustainability outcomes a carbon credit project could bring?

In 2024/10/09, the Article 6.4 supervisory body approved the A6.4 SD Tool that aims to contribute to the 17 sustainable development goals(SDGs) with carbon credit project development.

The requirement provides a structured approach to

Identify potential positive and negative impacts on the SDG goals with risk assessment.

Monitor the SDG goal indicators throughout the project monitoring activities.

Minimize any negative environmental and social impacts with risk assessment.

Stakeholder engagement is encouraged with 2 engagement phases: local stakeholder consultation and global stakeholder consultation.

Carbon credit project developers will receive all the comments and feedback from local communities, international organizations, and government parties for better project implementation.

The consultation documents will be made public for future review and reference. All A6.4 activities, including all CDM projects that apply for the A6.4 mechanism transition, shall apply these requirements to avoid and minimize negative project impacts.
